What are minorstones?
Minorstones are small, everyday achievements that you notice and celebrate, instead of waiting for the big, traditional milestones like first steps or first words.
The term comes from trend-forecasting agency WGSN, which framed it as part of its Future Consumer 2026 outlook: people redefining "milestones" around personal progress and everyday joys rather than conventional benchmarks. Parenting writers have since applied it to babies and toddlers, and it has become one of the more talked-about parenting ideas of 2026.
It is a close cousin of "inchstones," a word parents (especially parents of children who reach milestones more slowly) have used for years to celebrate incremental progress.
Why it is resonating with parents
Most parents know the feeling. You open a milestone chart, see that your baby "should" be doing something by a certain week, and your stomach drops.
Minorstones flip that around. Instead of asking "Is my baby on time?", you ask "What did my baby do today that was new?"
- It lowers the pressure of comparing your baby to a chart or to other people's babies.
- It spreads the joy out. There are far more small wins than big ones.
- It builds a better record. The tiny moments are the ones that fade fastest from memory.
One note: this is a mindset, not a medical framework. If you have concerns about your baby's development, speak to your child health nurse or GP. Celebrating small wins does not replace developmental check-ups.
Examples of baby minorstones
Not sure what counts? Here are some ideas by stage.
Newborn to 3 months
- Holding eye contact for a few seconds
- A first real smile in response to your voice
- Lifting their head briefly during tummy time
- Settling in a new way, like with a certain song
3 to 6 months
- Discovering their own hands or feet
- A first proper giggle
- Reaching for a toy and getting it
- Rolling partway, even if they get stuck
6 to 12 months
- Sitting for a few seconds unsupported
- Pulling a sock off on purpose
- Waving, clapping or a first "mama" babble
- Trying a new food without making the face
Toddlers
- Putting on a shoe, even on the wrong foot
- Carrying their own plate to the bench
- Saying a new word, even if only you understand it
How to start celebrating minorstones
You do not need a ceremony. Keep it light:
- Pick a daily moment. After the bath or at bedtime works well.
- Name one new thing. "Today she grabbed her own foot."
- Write it down. A line is enough, with a date.
- Share it. Send it to your partner, grandparents or other carers.
- Look back monthly. A small review shows how much has changed.
The "write it down" step is where most good intentions fall over. At 2am you will swear you will remember. You will not.
Common questions
Is "minorstones" the same as "inchstones"? They are very similar. Inchstones has been used for years, particularly in families whose children develop on a different timeline. Minorstones is the 2026 term from trend forecasters, applied more broadly.
Do small wins replace real milestones? No. Developmental milestones still matter for tracking progress, and they are how health professionals check that things are on course. Minorstones sit alongside them.
What if my baby seems behind? Babies develop at different speeds, but if you are worried, talk to a health professional rather than waiting. Keeping a dated record of what you have noticed makes that conversation easier.
Is there research behind minorstones? It is a cultural trend rather than a clinical one, and most coverage is commentary, not survey data. We have not seen figures on how many parents do it, so treat it as an idea that works for many families, not a proven method.
