The 2025 registry lists — the official record

Placements the state registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages published for births registered in 2025. A rank is shown only where one was published; “Top 10” or “Top 100” marks names reported on a list without a stated position.

Every state and territory registry publishes its own list (linked below), and they do not publish alike: NSW, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia release 100 names per list with exact registration counts, Western Australia, Tasmania and the ACT announce a top ten without counts, and the Northern Territory publishes a top twenty — most recently for 2022. No registry publishes a national list at all, so the national ranking here is one BubSync adds up itself from the counts the four counting registries released.

Where do the popular-name lists come from?

Every state and territory registry of births, deaths and marriages publishes its most-registered names yearly — several, like NSW and Queensland, as open data with exact counts. They count actual birth registrations, so they lag the trend by design: a name rising fast on social media shows up in the registry lists a year or two later. No registry publishes a national list, so BubSync computes its own by adding the registries’ published counts together, and says so where it appears.

What does "liked on BubSync" mean?

Visitors to this tool can heart names they like, and the monthly tally of those anonymous hearts is shown as what parents are liking right now. It is an early, unofficial signal — the registries count actual birth registrations and publish a year or more later, so the two lists measure different things and are labelled accordingly.

Is my shortlist stored anywhere?

Your shortlist lives on your own device, with no account or sign-up. Sharing it creates a link that carries the names inside the link itself, so nothing about your list is stored on a server. Hearting a name also adds one anonymous count to that name’s monthly tally — just the name and a random browser id, nothing about you.

Can I add a name that isn’t in the pool?

Yes — search for it and add it as your own, with what it means to you. Your own names stay on your device and inside your share links, clearly marked as your addition. We count the name itself as an anonymous suggestion (never your meaning, which stays on your device), and suggested names only ever join the public pool after a human review — they are never published automatically.

Where do the name meanings and origins come from?

They are the standard etymological glosses that name dictionaries broadly agree on, kept short. Where scholars genuinely disagree about a name’s root, the entry says so rather than picking a side. They are reference notes for the fun of it, not genealogy.

Are there rules about what you can name a baby in Australia?

Yes. State registries can refuse names that are obscene or offensive, unreasonably long, include symbols or numerals, or claim an official title or rank — the well-known refusals are names like "King" or "Justice" in some states. The registry assessing your registration has the final say, and the rules differ slightly state to state.

How do I know if a name is too popular?

The registry lists give you the base rate: even the top name in NSW is given to well under 1 in 100 babies, so "popular" today is far less crowded than it was a generation ago, when top names covered several in every classroom. If ubiquity matters to you, check where a name sits on the latest list and whether it is rising or falling.

What should we check before settling on a name?

The classics: say it out loud with the surname, check the initials spell nothing unfortunate, try the natural nicknames, and search it once to see who else has it. None of these are rules — they are ways to find out now rather than at the first day of school.
