BabyCenter's 2026 Top Baby Names Are Out: Eliana Jumps to No. 2, and Here Is What the Data Shows

BubSync Team··6 min read

According to BabyCenter's rankings, released on 20 October 2026, Olivia is the most popular girl name and Noah is the most popular boy name. The big story is Eliana, which jumped from No. 7 in 2025 to No. 2.

Here are the top 10s.

Girls

  1. Olivia
  2. Eliana
  3. Amelia
  4. Charlotte
  5. Sophia
  6. Isabella
  7. Emma
  8. Aurora
  9. Evelyn
  10. Mia

Boys

  1. Noah
  2. Liam
  3. Oliver
  4. Elijah
  5. Mateo
  6. Lucas
  7. Elias
  8. Levi
  9. Ezra
  10. Leo

Where this data comes from (and why it matters)

BabyCenter's rankings draw on proprietary data from more than 350,000 babies born in 2026 to parents registered on its app. Because it collects names in real time, it gives an early look at naming trends, well before official annual birth-registry data is published.

That is also its limit. The data reflects BabyCenter's user base, which is largely American. If you are in Australia, your state's birth registry may tell a different story, so treat this list as a signal rather than a verdict.

The biggest movers

Risers

  • Eliana went from No. 7 to No. 2.
  • Evelyn returned to the girls' top 10 after dropping out in 2024.
  • Magnolia entered the top 100 for the first time, at No. 88.
  • Elias climbed eight spots to No. 7, its first top-10 appearance.
  • Leo returned to the boys' top 10 after dropping off last year.
  • Milo, Stetson, Archer and Dean entered the boys' top 100. Dean debuted at No. 100, its first top-100 appearance this century.

Fallers

  • Ellie dropped to No. 11.
  • Leah and Brooklyn fell out of the girls' top 100.
  • Christian and Ryan fell out of the boys' top 100.

Three patterns worth noticing

1. The letter E is everywhere. Names starting with E make up 15% of the girls' top 100, and Eliana, Emma, Evelyn and Elias all feature in the top 10s. On the boys' side, J is the most common starting letter, at 14% of the top 100.

2. Longer names are in. Nearly a third of the top 100 names for both boys and girls have at least seven letters. Short and sweet is not the only look any more.

3. Pop culture and mythology are shaping the list. BabyCenter points to hockey-themed TV dramas, Greek mythology and Western-inspired entertainment. Names like Atlas, Orion, Iris and Daphne are gaining attention, along with Western-style names such as Stetson, Walker and Wilder.

Not necessarily. Parents often ask whether a top-10 name means their child will be one of three in the same class. A few honest points:

  • Popular does not mean everywhere. Even the top name usually accounts for a small slice of births.
  • Nicknames and spellings change the feel. A familiar name with a family nickname can still feel entirely yours.
  • Rising names are the real "will there be three of them" risk. If a name is climbing fast, it may be more common by the time your baby starts school than the current rankings suggest.

If you love a name, the ranking should be a tie-breaker, not a veto.

How to use the list without picking blindly

Try this simple approach when you and your partner are stuck:

  1. Each write a private shortlist of five. Do not discuss it yet.
  2. Look for overlap. Even one shared name is a great start.
  3. Say it out loud with the surname. Try it as a call across a playground and as a whisper at 3am.
  4. Check the meaning and origin. Know the story behind it before you explain it for the next eighteen years.
  5. Check local data. See how it is tracking where you live.
